12 Moments of Anime 2011: Rider Crashes The Party (Fate/Zero)

Fate Zero - 05 - Large 31

[Tenth Moment: 12 Moments of Anime 2011: Bye Bye Sheryl (Macross Frontier Sayonara no Tsubasa)]

Everybody’s talking about the Banquet of Kings, and rightfully so. That moment was amazingly powerful. However I prefer to remember love for Rider’s first real moment, when he established himself as more than just BIG talk. Him addressing Keyneth El-Melloi, who would’ve been his master had Waver not stolen him was a great moment in how he validated Waver – who, as a character that would otherwise be this annoying, petty weakling, into someone we could root for.

If Rider believes stands by him, why wouldn’t we? It’s glorious.

Fate Zero - 05 - Large 07

There are ways to say winning isn’t everything;
Elegant ways, subdued ways, understated like a well-tailored suit.
But this is not a time for indulging such things,
When things of great worth hang with bleeding fingers on sword blades.

This is the time to take your shirtless glory
And bring the thunder down that asshole, shitting up a duel between
Worthy combatants with his dishonorable tricks.
Yeah you tell him, like the sniveling fucker that he is.

Watch the troll run, wasting his command spell on being a limp dick.
His full comeuppance may be served by someone else,
But for tonight, the indignity on crushing this choad’s weak game
Must be borne by you, O King of Conquerors.

Bear it not as an unjust labor, but as an opportunity to teach
Your inexperienced Master, what the possibilities are of Manhood.

Rider! Oh man this episode was really great just to see the servants interacting with each other, that and Rider is so cool to watch every week just to see what the hell he will do next. Still one of the best moments his arrival like I WANT IN THIS FIGHT!

  2. SPIRAL says:

Sadly, I think we’re going to have to wait another four months before we get to see any decent Rider action. I’m glad they showed his Noble Phantasm during the Banquet since a lot of things went unsatisfied this first season.

At least for me. It was a good run, don’t get me wrong, but I expected, and still am expecting, great things to come from this show.

  3. SPIRAL says:

I actually did mean four months. You know Fate Zero is only 13 episodes and it’s airing the second set of episodes in April. It’s a spring 2012 anime (2nd season).

  4. Reid says:

The Fate/Stay series is the coolest riff on the “mon fighting” genre probably ever. I wish I had come up with this idea myself.

I’m actually enjoying the ‘talky’ bits of this show more than the action-orientated stuff but yeah, I do wish it hadn’t left so much for the second season. Four months is going to feel like a long time indeed!

This series really is true to the Fate franchise though, at least in the sense that it has memorable characters and fascinating dynamics going on between them. I was worried about the size of the cast and lack of one central character leading to loss of focus, but TBH Shirou was a bit annoying and let’s face it, Saber’s still the same and we have a truly epic hero in the form of Rider. In fact the Rider/Waver pairing is possibly my favourite – the two of them are not only interesting but an incredible amount of fun to watch too. I’m so glad it’s managed to meet my expectations…a real highlight of the year.

    • Ugh Emiya Shirou.

There are some talky bits that work:

Any time it involves Kiritsugu’s harem
      Anything with Rider in it

The rest are kind of hard to sit through, but there are really bad ones:

      Toshaka with anyone
Gilgamesh and Kirei (ugggghhhhhh the last ep hurt)
