I’m trying out this new regular column here on We Remember Love. Every week I’ll look into a character in anime or manga that made an impression on me (Mechafetish may do a few of these posts as well). These characters will be side characters for the most part, and will not be characters that I will obviously like (GAR pilots and the like, Lafiel, singing-idols, and lead characters in general especially from the anime that influenced me). Maybe in the course of this exercise I may discover Gundam characters that I presently don’t appreciate. I promise not to try to change anyone’s mind about Ranka.

The only criteria for a character to be included in this series (note the disqualification parameters I outlined above) is that for them to be in anime that I’ve already watched or am currently watching. My backlog is formidable as it is. If you want me to read a character for this column. Kindly refer to this list to know who I have a shot at getting to know in depth.

While a full analysis of the character may not prove to be possible, perhaps due to the series either being incomplete at the time of writing or that I haven’t finished the show yet, I’ll instead be focusing on a specific aspect that I find interesting and hopefully worth discussing.

You can check out the posts in this series under the category showing a bit of character (a sub-category of analysis).

Feel free to post your requests on the comments section below.

DON'T WORRY IT WON'T BE THIS KIND OF CHARACTER ANALYSIS

Please do Cornelia of Code Geass next!

Ok, I’ll do a post on Cornelia. I think she’s very interesting indeed. I may not do a full breakdown of her narrative because that’s a bit of work, but I’ll look for a moment where her quality really shines through.

But, it doesn’t mean that the requests are closed. I’ll listen to everything. I may be more ready to write about some characters than others, so who knows how soon your request gets covered.

Eva’s Gendo. I’ve read various snippets on Misato, but, yeah, a write-up on Gendo would be interesting.

The nature of the Misato/Ritsuko dichotomy is interesting as well.

Gendo! My mouth is watering! I’ll do it!

I dunno. If I had to pick a character I want someone to look deeper at from a show in your list, the first that comes to mind is Tama-chan from Bamboo Blade. One of those shows I think is quite undervalued despite relative acclaim.

Tama-chan to borrow your term, is total fuckwin. My favorite is Kirino but Tama-chan will be put on my list. I love Bamboo Blade!

Good to know, since your 7 wasn’t screaming it at me, haha. WE WANT SEASON 2~!

  8. November 14, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Revi or Rock of Black Lagoon fame.

  9. November 15, 2008 at 5:33 am

Please do a review of Alto Saotome from Macross F.

    Thanks!

    @ omisyth

Rock is an interesting character for me to do this on, so he’s on my list.

    @ Roland

Alto is too obvious a choice for me, and I want to look at more characters that don’t get a lot of attention. However, look no further than Crusader’s post on Alto. I can’t do any better. It’s soooo good!

Reccoa, Zeta gundam. Fllay allster, Gundam SEED. Lets get some (wrongly) disliked females in there.

Anemone from Eureka Seven (manga prefferably. Much darker and serious).

    Mammimi from FLCL…

    Just some misunderstood females

I’ll look into these characters, I think Mammimi is very interesting ^_^

Dude, you have to teach me how to do this!! I’m starting my anime education! Love your posts! :)

  14. December 10, 2008 at 7:30 pm

I know that she’s the main character, but Top Wo Nerae! 2’s Nono ^_^

  15. December 11, 2008 at 1:27 pm

I’d say Kirino myself, but since digitalboy has already suggested Tama-chan, I think I might refrain from that for the moment. So how about Akira from ARIA? :P

    @ picchar

I’ll consider it. I find her a bit uninteresting as a lead, despite being AWESOME. I’ll have to watch her again.

    @ TheBigN

You’re Nebuchadnezzar to me right now. Do you think I can write credibly about her having only watched “The Animation”?

  17. December 11, 2008 at 4:37 pm

That’s kind of the point. Obviously you should watch more. :P

not sure if i’m in the right place, but you might want to do a feature on philippine animation at around this time. the animated film “dayo” is showing in the metro manila filmfest and the blog buzz i’m hearing so far is generally positive compared to two previous (that i know of) pinoy attempts at a full length animated movie.

to be on topic, i’m sensing moe with the “dayo” character ana, the manananggal. could you confirm? :D

  19. December 26, 2008 at 6:25 pm

    @ gloval

The trailers did not interest me much – as I anticipate the movie to be as preachy as hell. Manananngal Moe is possible – do you feel the need to protect her? comfort her? make things okay for her?

If you answer yes to any of the questions, she may indeed be moe.

  20. January 1, 2009 at 10:07 pm

here’s an interesting idea, write about one character through another character. Revy through Anemone, or Tahlo through Misato.

  21. January 1, 2009 at 11:25 pm

ah that’s a cool idea because it, as we were discussing earlier, contains both fanfiction (creation) and analytic elements. Plus it would be pretty hilarious – Shin Asuka through Master Asia…Kouji (infinite R) through Lord Genome….or something

  23. January 11, 2009 at 8:54 am

Emo leads of the recent Gundam series

    Kira
    Shinn
    Jihad-Kun

    and the like…

    @ xau

I’ll write about Setsuna, given I have a particular moment in mind. Thank you! ^_^

    Now do KYOU.

Or Tomoya. I’m not too fussy.

Better yet, Jerry/Terry Sanders from 08th MS Team.

  31. March 13, 2009 at 4:44 pm

There was a series. Called Manga Bible. Or Bible Manga. The main character was this badass fellow called Jesus. I think he was Mexican, and I want you to do a post on him. For ethnic reasons. All the people you cover seem to be Japanese or white or not human at all. You need to add some color and variety to avoid charges of racism from people like me, who’d accuse you of racism on a whim.

If, however, you are too blatantly racist to do a piece on a Mexican priest, I offer you the next best thing – Edmond Dantes from Gankutsuou. I admit, this is a difficult piece, since Gankutsuou admits that Edmond Dantes is dead (having been so before the start of the series, and only showing up in flashbacks throughout), but he is dark-skinned and French.

It would do you well to heed my words, for if you do, I’ll help you avoid racism charge from myself.

Roy is a favorite of mine, so I’m less inclined to write about him. Nonetheless, you may be interested in reading this post, which documents how I identified with him along with other Macross characters throughout my life.

seeing as it’s been like 6 months, I’m sure you won’t mind if I do the Tama-chan post myself? Also, I was going to do one on a character from Berserk. Manga-only.

I deeply apologize. Rip ‘em out dude. Do what you do.
