My Additional Tanabata Wishes for Suzumiya Haruhi Season Two

haruhi s2 01 drawings on the ground i am here

I’m no hardcore Haruhiist, but I am a fan and I’m quite happy to have seen the new episode. It was quite interesting and had a number of good moments. I’ve seen the original series at least twice (in different sequences), I’ve completed watching both -chan series spin-offs, and have read at least the first three light novels. One of the things that I appreciate about the anime in particular, is how it plays with the tropes it uses. It’s not unlike Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, who seemingly makes fun of the shows it references, but not really. It’s kind of like, rememering love…

Time-travelers, Aliens, ESPers, (Moeblob, Emo-less girl, Fujoshi-bait): Haruhi wasn’t interested in any interactions save for these. But I wonder, why did she stop here? Could it be that further creatures of her imagination would’ve complicated things too soon? Or, perhaps these other options are cards up the creators’ sleeves to prolong the run of the successful series. Either way, I find their absence curious given that their presence would be part-way sendups to the very idea of them, their trope-ic and memetic natures and compositions. All in good fun,

So she’s back… maybe, maybe not. I do know that after the Macross Frontier movie it may be another five years until the next installment in the franchise. At least for Haruhi fans, we (yes, we) didn’t suffer the poor fortune of having another studio adapt the next sequel with few to none of the original staff participating. It happened in the early 90s; 8 years after Macross: Do You Remember Love? (1984) — in Macross II: Lovers Again OVA series (1992) which was received so poorly that it isn’t even part of the canon anymore.  It’d be a number of years until a true sequel in Macross Plus (1994; another OVA series at that) would arrive. Kyoto Animation is still making our Haruhi.

see, i’ve only read the first three novels too so the range of knowledge is limited by the fact, but i haven’t heard of any zombies. i have heard a lot of talk about sliders on the forums, but i think it’s speculation regarding one of the characters and not actual canon. don’t know, don’t wanna know..yet. hopefully season 3 will be next year!

  2. @Animekritik: Well there are zombies involved, just not in the actual show. BOOYAH!

Okay but seriously, there actually is a key member of the Haruhi staff IS missing. I’m talking about the one who singlehandedly turned the franchise into the larger than life meme that it probably wouldn’t have been otherwise. Yamamoto Yutaka….the guy who came up with the dance.

Anyway there’s so much hype about the fact that this aired and not nearly enough talk about the content of the actual episode and what it means. It kind of gives one a feel of this series being to big for it’s britches, but I guess that really doesn’t matter to most people or something. I can remember all the talk flying around whenever an episode of R2 or Gundam 00 aired but nothing here so much as people still hung up on the fact that it aired, which to me is old news a day after the fact…..really disappointed at the lack of real online discussion about the content of the episode. Maybe we should team up an do something together for the next new episode. Something a little more down to earth then what’s currently out there at the moment.

Yutaka eh, that seems significant indeed. Well dude, hype is hype. I’m always up for discussion, but I’m not interested in an evaluation or a review. Thematic explorations – but not value judgments. Basically, I want a fanboy discussion and I don’t know if you want to do that.

    • gloval says:

I think you’ve raised this lack of content discussion in the AS forums and some have replied that the content is already in the light novels and the three years wait must’ve provided enough time for discussions on that, so talks on the anime would be more on the new things it would contribute to the story.

There’s also a problem about discussing the content of Haruhi Suzumiya. For instance in this Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody episode, we have time travel. There had been posts in the episode thread about this, and I must say, even if I consider myself more science literate than the average person, a lot of things went over my head. If you’d want to talk about the story, you’d have to touch on theoretical stuff like this and I don’t think it would appeal to most fans.

      It’s easier to discuss:
      – how Mikuru is moe in this episode (See how she felt around for her time travel device? Loop it for ten minutes and it’ll be the new Nyan Nyan and Untan Untan.)
      – how Yuki is awesome as usual and ZOMG her glasses are back.
      – loli Haruhi
      – the data explosion over the internets (I personally feel bad for K-On!, it had a pretty good episode this time. My consolation is that Mikuru seemed to have sleep-talked “Mio” when Kyon was waking her.)

Come to think of it, it’s just like in Macross Frontier. Here I was trying to discuss about the mecha, sci-fi and conspiracy stuff, but almost everyone else are just talking about the love triangle. The delicious trolling at the end serves them right!

      • @gloval: Kind of makes you wonder why they put all of the sci-fi stuff in there at all eh? Fact of the matter is that was what kind of seperated Haruhi a bit from all of the other high school moe antics series out there and without it it would hardly be anything especially memorable at all. One would think that would be what people would be all over discussion wise if anything when it comes to Haruhi’s gimmicks.

Well I did get a short talk about the nature of temporal distortions and multiverse theory as they relate to Haruhi’s ability so I guess I wasn’t totally left with an “uuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh…………..” reaction to all of this.

  3. sadakups says:

Alright, that’s it. I’ll stay away from the internetz as the bitch goddess has taken control again. I mean, if I see a lot of posts in a Haruhi thread when there’s just one episode… that’s just fantard-ism right there.

  4. drmchsr0 says:

Haruhi is Heinlein’s “All You Zombies” in a moé package, sans the horrible trauma, rape, sexchange, and bartender. The idea that Kyon may have inadvertently created a complex closed loop still stands, though, which is the main gist of “All You Zombies”.

    • ghostlightning says:

I’ve only read Stranger in a Strange Land (that’s his right?), Starship Troopers, and the very entertaining Friday.

All You Zombies, the title alone is awesome. I’ll get if I come across it.

  5. omisyth says:

I wish there were more ninjas in Haruhi.

And why is a slider represented by delicious Hamburger?

  6. X10A_Freedom says:

With such huge traffic on AS and such, I don’t even bother reading them! I did find the time travel intriguing though, and the fact that there’s no cause and effect of travelling back into the past, which I take in other words:

“Whatever happened, happened – you cannot change the past, even if you tried to.”

The above quote describes the TV series LOST which has had its share of time travel and pseudo-physics. Anyhow the mysteries aside the Bamboo Leaf was an excellent episode.

    • ghostlightning says:

Could Haruhi’s meeting with Kyon which resulted in him being her obedient dog have future repercussions?

  7. Strictly speaking, Nagato and Asakura are both robots, specifically “Humanoid Interfaces”, with vast stores of versatile nanites and sophisticated repair faculties.

As for Sliders, they are mentioned during the Haruhi movie as she tries to figure out how to get “John” back to his own universe. I don’t think they’ll turn up as a dedicated “thing”, but more as a descriptive allegory for what’s going on to Kyon and others in a given storyline.

The -chans definitely enjoy the notion of Miss Mori and Tsuruya being ninja of somesort, I think it’s almost obligatory that actual ninja will show up eventually, but not likely as a centre-stage event, more likely as background issues.

Zombies would need to be an isolated Halloween-themed episode, almost certainly one absent of Haruhi for whatever reason, as it’d be very difficult to have a horde of zombies attack with her around and not give things away as supernatural, thereby requiring another appeal to John Smith. Perhaps the Brigade has a horror movie night, during which Haruhi falls asleep, and zombies start attacking.

Pirates I don’t think are viable, Japan may be an island nation and the Brigade may have gone to an island before, but they spend the vast majority of their time land-bound, and having pirates turn up would require some severe shoe-horning.
